Stone repairs and restoration
Repairs to existing and traditional stonework, including repointing, lime work and stone washing.
Stone repairs and restoration
Weather, age and unsuitable previous repairs can all take their toll on traditional stonework. Kingshill undertakes repairs and restoration to existing masonry, with the work considered around the condition and type of stone already in place.
Lime pointing and repointing
Traditional stonework often requires a different approach from modern masonry. On ashlar, Historic Environment Scotland says cement should not be used for repointing, because it traps water in the wall. Lime lets the wall breathe. The mix is agreed after the joints have been seen.
Stone washing
Cleaning existing stonework can improve its appearance while revealing more of the original stone beneath accumulated dirt and weathering. Contact Kingshill to discuss the condition of the stonework and whether cleaning forms part of the work required.
Stone surveys
Not every wall needs the same repair. If the condition of existing stonework or the extent of repointing is unclear, request a stone survey before deciding on the next step. Photographs can help with the first look. The wall may still need to be inspected before any recommendation or quotation.
