Lime or Cement?

The right mortar matters when repairing traditional stonework.

Old ashlar was pointed in lime so the wall can breathe. Historic Environment Scotland says cement should not be used to repoint that work, because it traps water. The result they list is decay in the stone, damp inside, and rotting timbers.

Where are you based?

Kingshill Masonry Contracts is based in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire.

The company works across central Scotland. Recent projects include Johnstone, Hamilton and Bonkle.

Can you build a new house in stone?

Yes. Recent work includes the stonework on a new-build home in Johnstone.

Can you build a stone extension?

Yes. Recent work includes a stone and blockwork extension in Bonkle and an extension in Hamilton.

Why is lime mortar used on traditional stonework?

On ashlar, Historic Environment Scotland says cement should not be used for repointing, because it traps water in the wall. Lime lets the wall breathe. The guide on this site quotes their page. It is their advice, not a specification for a particular wall.

Does an extension in Scotland need a building warrant?

In the ordinary case, yes. The building standards handbook says work that increases the floor area of a house is not exempt. Read the short note, and check with your council. It is not legal advice, and it is not a decision on your house.

Can I send photos of my stonework?

Yes. You can send photographs of the stonework to Kingshill on WhatsApp on . Photos can help provide some initial context around your enquiry, although the work may still need to be inspected before any recommendations or quotation can be confirmed.
